In 2011, the Fukushima disaster shattered a generation. Radiation, evacuation zones, collapsed schools—normal childhoods vanished.
Yet from the ruins, a youth orchestra rose.
The Fukushima Youth Sinfonietta (FYS), powered by Keys of Change USA, became a sanctuary where trauma transformed into expression, and isolation became community.

Kyoka Date, 22 — Violin
Kyoka was a first grader when the earthquake struck, living just months into her new life in Ōkuma Town near the nuclear plant.
Evacuation came swiftly; she fled with her family, leaving behind her school, her belongings, her sense of safety.
Starting over in a new city was especially hard for a shy child.
Music became her anchor—first piano, then violin, and eventually the world of FYS.
Through international exchanges in Mexico and India, she discovered that music changes its color from country to country, and that the world is far wider—and her worries far smaller—than she once believed.

Yuzu Sato, 23 — Horn
Growing up in an information-scarce contaminated zone, Yuzu absorbed fear without fully understanding it. Depression and identity crises followed.
Her turning point came during a transformative study-abroad experience in India.

The disaster erased her final year of elementary school—but FYS gave her voice back.
